One of the three Costa Coffee shops in Plymouth city centre is to close – but only temporarily. The chain is to shut the outlet at 51-53 New George Street, housed in the former Disney store unit, for a refit.
But it will replace it by installing a “pop-up” Costa Coffee mobile van on Armada Way. The company also stressed that the two other Costa Coffee shops, at 1-3 New George Street and in Drake Circus Shopping Centre, will remain open.
The mall Costa has been hit with repeated closures, the most recent in October, but it is currently open. The company said it was due to “ongoing maintenance issues which have now been resolved”.

Meanwhile, the outlet at 51-53 New George Street will shut for “a transformative renovation” on Wednesday, November 15. The company said the two-week shutdown is necessary “so it can receive a complete modern uplift”.
The mobile Costa will start serving customers on Saturday, November 18, and will remain until Sunday, November 26. It will be sited near the Sundial.
A Costa Coffee spokesperson said: “It comes as Costa Coffee continues to invest in new and innovative ways to excite coffee fans and their local communities. The New George Street store will be coming back better than ever before, with an enhanced customer experience, a brighter and bolder look and feel, and some brand-new features that have not yet been seen in its High Street stores.
“This refresh forms part of Costa Coffee’s plans to continually invest in its stores, team members, and customers, helping to give a little boost to the towns and high streets it is proud to be a part of.”
And the spokesperson added: “Fear not, you’ll still be able to pick up your favourite Costa Coffee whilst the store is temporarily closed. The store’s team members will be serving customers from a new pop-up Costa Coffee mobile van on Armada Way, or at the store at 1-3 New George Street.”
In January this year, a 40-seater Costa Coffee branch at the Haye Road, Elburton, venue. It was the latest in an astonishing number of places where a Costa coffee can be bought in Plymouth.
In addition to the two coffee shops in New George Street and the one in the mall, there is an outlet in Exeter Street’s Friary Retail Park, and others at Plymstock Broadway, three at Marsh Mills and one at Derriford Hospital and about 40 other locations where a cup of Costa brew can be enjoyed.
