🇵🇹 Portugal: Eurovision 1994 Representative Sara Tavares Has Died

Portugal’s 1994 Eurovision representative, Sara Tavares, has died aged 45.

Sara Tavares represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 in Dublin with the song “Chamar a Música”, which ended up finishing in 8th place, one of the best results of Portugal ever at the contest. She also received 12 points from the Spanish jury and was awarded points by 13 of the 25 countries in the contest.

The singer has passed after fighting for over a decade against a brain tumor, which led Sara to pause her music career between 2009 and 2018. In that year, she was nominated for a Latin Grammy.

Sara’s career was kickstarted in 1993 when she participated in Chuva de Estrelas, where she went on to win the first series. She would go on to win Festival RTP da Canção 1994 scoring a comfortable victory and securing the right to represent Portugal at Eurovision. During the course of her career, the singer released six studio albums.

Of Cape-Verdian descent, Sara Tavares performed on the Eurovision stage once again in 2018 as one of the interval acts in Lisbon.

The Eurovoix team would like to express our condolences to Sara´s family and friends at this difficult time.
